Fighting for Careers You Can Count On

Clontarf26.jpgSchool officers in Queensland Catholic schools play a critical role in the delivery of quality education to our students, yet sadly the reality for many is one of insecure employment.

Our union’s Careers You Can Count On campaign will seek to address three key issues for school officer members in the upcoming round of collective bargaining in Queensland Catholic schools:

  • Fighting back against insecure work and putting an end to fluctuating hours
  • Access to meaningful career paths and security of income
  • The provision of quality professional development opportunities

Member feedback collected ahead of bargaining confirmed the urgency of these issues among school officers.

IEUA-QNT Assistant Branch Secretary Brad Hayes said school officers undertake a multitude of roles in our schools, from teacher aides, to IT support to laboratory technicians and AV specialists.

“Queensland Catholic schools could not provide the level of quality education they do without our school officers,” Mr Hayes said.

Mr Hayes said despite the challenges of their employment arrangements, school officers demonstrated significant commitment to their employer.

“So many school officers are on fixed-term contracts or term-time continuing employment and have their hours varied every year with no guarantees.

“Clearly it is time for Queensland Catholic School employers to show the same level of commitment to their school officers as these staff show each and every day in their schools.”

Mr Hayes said the lack of a minimum level of employer-provided professional development denied school officers the opportunity to further enhance their skills, knowledge and expertise.

“For too long school officers have been denied the opportunity to build their careers in Catholic schools.

“Employers have failed to provide a guaranteed minimum level of quality professional development.

“School officers want and deserve professional opportunities and rewarding careers.

Mr Hayes said improving job security and certainty for school officers is critical for both the professional and personal lives of staff.

“All school officers deserve Careers You Can Count On and our union will be campaigning to ensure this is the outcome for members in collective bargaining.”
