Capturing nature: talent revealed at art awards

Topics : Awards

IMG_6681.jpgStudents and teachers from across Queensland and the Northern Territory showed their artistic talents at our union’s annual Excellence in Art Design Awards.

The ceremony, held on Wednesday 5 September, showcased works of art in a variety of forms – from painting, to sculpture, to photography – that captured the theme of Nature, inspired by the Aristotle quotation “In all things of nature, there is something of the marvellous”.

This year attracted over 1,900 entries. Entrants ranged in categories from preschool and kindergarten, to the open division.

The awards were presented by Brisbane artist and teacher Kylie Farrelly.

Judges Mary McBride, Victoria McTaggart, Julie Seidel, Kylie Dell, Aunty Thersa Nunn and John Fitz-Walter were wowed by the entries.

Aunty Thersa Nunn commended the artwork of Yvonne Fafungian of St Peter’s Lutheran College – who received the Award of Excellence in Indigenous Art.

“Yvonne’s painting speaks to everyone.

“There is so much detail within the painting and every time you look at it you find something new.”

Each year the Harriet Hunter Memorial Award is presented to an entrant whose artwork is particularly inspired.

The Harriet Hunter Memorial Award was established in memory and celebration of Harriet Hunter, a gifted and talented student whose life was unexpectedly and tragically taken in 1999 after trying to save her dog in the South-East Queensland floods.

Lucy Fahy of Brigidine College received this year’s award.

Judge John Fitz-Walter praised Lucy’s work.

“Your artwork is one that is both evocative of nature’s marvels and informative of its underlying structures. You have combined these aspects so as to captivate the viewer into contemplating, reconsidering and responding in ways that enable them to be part of nature and not apart from nature.”

Branch Secretary Terry Burke said that IEUA-QNT established the awards in 1994 to promote and encourage artistic students.

“Art is a very important area of learning in schools and kindergartens and IEUA-QNT is proud to support students, teachers and practicing artists in Queensland. Award recipients are to be congratulated for their remarkable achievements.”
