Celebrating World Teachers' Day 2016

Topics : Celebration daysTeachers

This Friday, 28 October 2016, IEUA-QNT members will come together alongside colleagues from the Queensland Teachers’ Union (QTU) to celebrate World Teachers’ Day.

This year’s theme “Valuing teachers, Improving their status” coincides with the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

Established in 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), World Teachers’ Day recognises the invaluable contribution teachers make to society in delivering quality education.

IEUA-QNT members are asked to celebrate the day with a number of Chapter activities including raising funds to show support for teaching colleagues in Nepal following the devastating earthquake in 2015.

Supporting our international colleagues

In keeping with the spirit of World Teachers’ Day, this year members and non-members are encouraged to show their support and raise funds through a gold coin donation for the Nepal Australia Friendship Association (NAFA).

Based in Brisbane, NAFA was founded in 1989 and assists disadvantaged communities in Nepal by funding health, education and village infrastructure projects in rural areas.

The earthquakes in April 2015 destroyed or severely damaged community infrastructure in over ten villages that have been supported by NAFA in the past. To date NAFA has raised approximately $500,000 of a total budget of $700,000 needed to rebuild critical village infrastructure. This includes a commitment to rebuild 48 classrooms in seven villages.

IEUA-QNT members and non-members can support the work of NAFA in the rebuilding effort by providing a gold coin donation this World Teachers’ Day during Chapter morning tea celebrations.

All funds, either collected as a group by the Chapter or directly sent by individual members, should be forwarded to the IEUA-QNT Office by Friday, 4 November 2016 via electronic transfer to the following account:

Account name: Independent Education Union of Australia QNT Branch
BSB: 034086
Account No.: 211540
Reference: WTD Appeal + your school’s name

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact IEUA-QNT HR Officer Maria Campanini via email to mcampanini@qieu.asn.au or by phoning (07) 3839 7020.

Chapter actions

IEUA-QNT Chapters will mark World Teachers’ Day on Friday, 28 October by holding a special World Teachers' Day morning tea and making a donation to help NAFA rebuild education facilities in Nepal.

Members are asked to send high resolution images from their celebrations to communications@qieu.asn.au for inclusion in our union journal, Independent Voice, as well as online publications and IEUA-QNT social media.
