Let’s help to end Indigenous disadvantage - Close the Gap Day 2016
This year, National Close the Gap Day will be celebrated on Thursday, 17 March.
In 2006, Australia's peak Indigenous and non-Indigenous health bodies, NGOs and human rights organisations initiated the Close the Gap Campaign to achieve equality for the health and life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by 2030.
The campaign was based on evidence that showed that significant improvements in health could be achieved within a relatively short time. Our Equity Committee endorses the campaign and asks our members to consider how we can collectively contribute to ensuring that all children born in this country can expect to live long, healthy and happy lives.
A morning tea
IEUA-QNT Chapters are encouraged to hold a morning tea to acknowledge the day, consider the many complex issues involved and how we, as educators of this generation, can contribute to better outcomes.
Members are encouraged to share this event with our wider membership by emailing a high resolution photograph of your celebration morning tea to email@example.com, for inclusion in Independent Voice.
Chapter Executive members are asked to invite members to attend a morning tea to discuss the issues and consider how the school community and contribute to better outcomes given the critical roles that childhood health education, physical activity, educational standards ultimately have on life expectancy.
IEUA-QNT chapters are encouraged to mark Close the Gap Day on Thursday, 17 March by holding a special ‘Close the Gap Day’ morning tea. (Remember to take some photographs at this event for publication in Independent Voice).
