Brisbane Grammar School leads sector on Domestic Violence Leave provisions

Domestic_Violence_-_STOP.jpgHaving endorsed their new agreement in an employee ballot this week, members at Brisbane Grammar School will become the first in the Queensland non-government school sector to have access to 10 days paid domestic violence leave.

IEUA-QNT Assistant Secretary Brad Hayes said the new provision sets the standard for which all other employers in the non-government sector must follow.

“Following Brisbane Grammar School, Queensland Catholic school employees are also set to have access to a similar provision should their agreement be endorsed in the current ballot. 

“That both the largest sector in the state as well as a single site school can put in place these provisions for employees, very clearly puts the onus on other employers in the sector to do the same,” he said.

The new provision within the Brisbane Grammar School agreement will provide this additional paid leave for an employee experiencing domestic violence in order to access any necessary health services, family support or legal assistance.

The clause also confirms leave arrangements for an employee who may be supporting another person who is experiencing domestic violence.

Mr Hayes said inclusion of domestic violence leave provisions in collective agreements was helping to bring about the attitudinal change needed to eliminate this social problem and its terrible impact on families.

“Union members and Brisbane Grammar School should be commended for this ground-breaking achievement. 

“The provision of domestic violence leave helps promote our schools as safe workplaces where employees can access all of the support and assistance they may need if they are suffering from family violence. 

“Often the workplace is the only place affected employees spend significant time away from the perpetrator. 

“Such a provision then not only helps support members, but also enables them to continue to earn their own money to provide financially for their families, hold a secure job and ultimately plot a path free from domestic violence,” he said.
