An open letter to the Queensland community
We are taking action to protect quality education in Queensland Catholic schools
This Thursday, 25 February 2016, thousands of teachers and school support staff in Catholic schools across Queensland will stop work for the whole day.
Taking a full day away from our classrooms and our students, your children, is not something we do lightly – it’s a last resort.
However, 10 months of continued indifference from Queensland Catholic school employers over issues impacting the quality of education we provide to our students has left us no choice.
With increasing workloads and the demands of new technologies, our employers need to provide us adequate time to do all the tasks fundamental to your children’s education.
A decade of wage disparity has also left the wages of Queensland school teachers both state and Catholic lagging behind our interstate colleagues.
We need to attract and retain our best teachers but current wage offers leave experienced Queensland teachers nearly $7000 per year worse off than counterparts in comparable states like NSW.
Across the country, teachers are doing comparable work in comparable Catholic schools for employers receiving comparable funding – yet they do not receive comparable wages.
As IEUA-QNT members we are taking action on these issues so that Catholic schools continue to be good schools.
Our students deserve the best quality education.
Catholic school employers need to recognise, respect and reward the ongoing dedication and professionalism of their teachers and school support staff across Queensland.
