Join fight to save Paid Parental Leave
A rally against cuts to Paid Parental Leave, held Monday, 1 June in Brisbane, sent a clear message to the federal government that these cuts are unacceptable.
Attendees at the rally helped to provide a voice for the 80,000 Australian families who will be affected by the federal government cuts.
The current universal Paid Parental Leave scheme was designed as a basic scheme for parents that would be complemented by more generous employer schemes taking women’s wages up to their full salary.
Under the federal government's new proposal, women who have access to employer Paid Parental Leave of equal or greater value than the federal government scheme will lose the ability to access two complementary schemes.
The cut equates to a loss of $11,500 for new parents and the prospect of having to return to work prematurely.
How to become involved in the fight to
Save Paid Parental Leave
Prior to its election, the Abbott government promised a Paid Parental Leave scheme that would provide women with six months of leave at their full salary.
In an extraordinary turnaround, the government now intends to erode existing entitlements and has said that women who have accessed complementary Paid Parental Leave schemes in the past are "double-dipping" in a "rort" of the system.
Help put a stop to these cuts by signing the Save Paid Parental Leave petition and send a strong message to the federal government.
