New provisions helping members protect their PPCT

Marking_PPCT_web_qual.pngHaving secured new provisions to protect planning, preparation and correction time (PPCT) in their latest collective agreement, members in Queensland Catholic Chapters are now actively ensuring these provisions are operating effectively in their schools.

The new PPCT provision allows adequate time for teachers to meet growing preparation and correction demands.

For the IEUA-QNT Chapter at Assisi College at Upper Coomera, the new provision has been instrumental in working with the school’s administration to negotiate the schedule and allocation of PPCT for teachers.

IEUA-QNT organiser Caryl Davies said improvements have been made to the operation of PPCT at the school to better support teachers in addressing workload issues.

“All school timetables have been marked up with the PPCT and the Middle Leadership time, while the school’s leadership is also properly consulting with staff on any changes surrounding school events,” Ms Davies said.

The Chapters at Clairvaux MacKillop College (Mount Gravatt), Unity College (Caloundra) and St Patrick’s College (Gympie) are also currently negotiating with school leadership to incorporate PPCT periods marked on their timetables.

IEUA-QNT organiser Pauline Elphinstone said having an open dialogue benefits both the employer and employees as it makes it clearer for everyone, improves the ability to utilise teachers effectively and helps to keep track of how much PPCT staff have available.

“Prior negotiation of PPCT provides teachers with direct input into the timing of their PPCT and helps avoid disruptions caused by school events or public holidays. 

“Such negotiations could take the form of whole of staff discussions, written submissions, surveys or discussions with Chapter representatives,” Ms Elphinstone said.

Members have been instrumental in ensuring this important provision is accessible to help address the insidious issue of workload for teachers.

While arrangements vary between Religious Institute, EREA and Diocesan schools, all Queensland Catholic schools have in place a formal mechanism whereby minimum PPCT must be provided to teachers where it has been unable to be accessed due to planned school activities.

Planned school activities that may disrupt PPCT include sports carnivals, mass or liturgies, camps and excursions, professional development sessions, parent-teacher interviews and performances.
