Employees VOTE NO to employer agreement

Employees to stop work today (Wednesday, 29 November) as part of protected industrial action 

Teachers and support staff working in Carinity Education schools in Brisbane, Gladstone and Hervey Bay will stop work today (29 November 2017) as part of protected industrial action following their rejection of an employer agreement which would have stripped their working conditions.

IEUA-QNT members at Carinity Education Glendyne (Hervey Bay), Carinity Education Southside (Sunnybank, Brisbane) and Carinity Education Gladstone will stop work this morning for one (1) hour from 9am-10am.

Employees, including teachers, in these three authorised schools will not be available for work at this time which includes scheduled classes.

The stop work action is part of ongoing protected industrial action being undertaken by IEUA-QNT members at the three schools and comes a day after employees voted no to a proposed employer agreement which would have:

  • Scrapped top-tier teacher classifications, meaning the most experienced teachers could be earning up to $8,000 less per year than their state and Catholic school counterparts.
  • Stripped conditions from the current collective agreement, including job share, redundancy provisions and access to the First Aid allowance for school support staff.
  • Significantly increased the hours of work expected by staff in leadership positions – in turn adding to workload pressures and leading to a greater likelihood of employee burnout. 
  • Limited employees’ access to contemporary leave conditions such as natural disaster leave and domestic violence leave.

Carinity Education employees have sent a clear message to the employer by voting the proposed agreement down at ballot.

For months now, Carinity Education staff have been clear to their employer that they do not want to work under sub-standard conditions and be treated as second-tier education employees. 

The results of the employer ballot reaffirm this, and so too does the protected action members are taking tomorrow.

Given the result of the ballot, the onus is now very clearly on Carinity Education to come back to the bargaining table with an enhanced position.

Carinity Education must respect their staff as providers of high quality education and provide them with working conditions to match.

The stop work action comes amidst ongoing protected action by staff in the three schools including bans on certain duties and meetings.

While IEUA-QNT members did not take the stop work action lightly, the employer’s determination to make cuts to their working conditions had left them no choice but to take the action.

Carinity Education’s plan to strip working conditions is very clear: 

  • Scrap top-tier teacher classifications, meaning the most experienced teachers could earn up to $8,000 less per year than their state and Catholic school counterparts.
  • Strip working conditions including job share, redundancy provisions and access to the First Aid allowance for school officers.
  • Significantly increase the hours of work expected by staff in leadership positions.
  • Limit employees’ access to contemporary leave conditions such as natural disaster leave and domestic violence leave.
Protected Industrial Action to commence 22 November

The decision to take protected industrial action is never taken lightly by members, but this action would not be necessary if Carinity had come to the negotiating table and listened to employees.

Actions commencing from midday, Wednesday 22 November include:

(i) employees will not attend, for an indefinite period, meetings of staff;

(ii) employees who are teachers will ban, for an indefinite period, any duties during their scheduled “Planning Preparation and Correction Time” other than preparation directly related to the teaching of students and the assessment or marking of student work;

(iii) an indefinite ban on the recording, or transmission to the employer, of assignment, assessment or exam results relating to students, provided that the ban will not be applied to either year 12 students or students who are leaving the school;

(iv) employees will delay responding to and/or actioning emails (except for emails which deal with: a genuine health or safety matter for employees or students; or child protection matters) for a period of time – such period will not exceed 30 days.

A stop work meeting for 60 minutes will commence at 9.00am, Wednesday, 29 November 2017.
