Nev O'Brien

Neville O’Brien is dedicated to many things. He is in his 40th year of teaching and has been a member of our union for 35 years.

But most recently, Neville has dedicated himself to a new challenge, that of Movember.

For the second year in a row the Lourdes Hill College maths and computing teacher has thrown out the razor and allowed himself to become one of the many faces of Movember.

Movember is an annual event that raises money for prostate cancer and depression. Started in Melbourne, the event is now a worldwide phenomenon with men from Finland to South Africa dedicating the month of November to growing a moustache and raising funds and awareness for men's health.

In 2010 in Australia alone, more than 130,000 people took part in Movember, raising $25 million.

“There are a large number of males who die every year in Australia from prostate cancer,” Mr O’Brien said.

“So we just have to get the message out there. One of our staff members had prostate cancer about three years ago.

“It was then that it really hit home for me and I wanted to help raise money.”

Mr O’Brien has collected donations from the staff at Lourdes Hill College, friends and family, and urges more union members to become involved in the annual fundraising event.
