Founded in 1959 the awards are without doubt the oldest continuing literary competition for Queensland school students in both the government and non-government education sectors.

The competition was initiated in March 1959 by the Assistant Mistresses Association of Queensland which represented teachers in private girls schools in Queensland.  The Association was a forerunner to the Queensland Independent Education Union which proudly continues the tradition of this competition.

The competition has five categories:

• Years 6 & 7
• Year 8
• Years 9 & 10
• Years 11 & 12
• Open Section (Teachers)

Each category has a first, second and third prize, and a highly commended section.
