Workplace Health and Safety

Workplace health and safety is a significant issue in our sector.  Educational settings require a higher than normal duty of care to be upheld, due to students and community members who regularly attend.  For this reason it is very important that our members are fully protected on the job.

It is our view that our members should have the right to:

  • A safe and healthy working environment;
  • Know what health and safety hazards they are exposed to at work and a right to be involved in and negotiate how hazards are dealt with;
  • Determine who represents them on health and safety issues; and
  • Refuse unsafe work.

The laws in Queensland state that the responsibility for workplace health and safety belongs to employers and employees alike. For this reason, it is essential that our members are fully aware of their rights and obligations.
