QUEENSLAND INDEPENDENT EDUCATION UNION (QIEU) PRIVACY STATEMENT

Queensland Independent Education Union (QIEU) is committed to the protection of the personal information of its members and other persons who may have dealings with QIEU.  QIEU is governed by the Privacy Act and has put in place procedures and policies to ensure protection of your personal information.

The principal activities of the union are:

  •  Representing members in workplace and industry wide negotiations with employers and employer organisations.
  •  Representing members before the various Industrial Relations Commissions and other courts and tribunals relevant to workplace issues.
  •  Providing information to members about their employment and related rights and obligations.
  •  Lobbying State and Federal governments and other relevant bodies about matters of concern to members and their families in relation to employment.
  • Publicising to members and to the community issues of concern to members and proposals to address these concerns.
  •  Conducting research and other activities in order to enable the union to effectively carry out these functions.
  •  Providing members with access to a range of services on favourable terms.

1. Personal Information Collected

QIEU generally collects the information requested in the annual membership form which includes details of name, address, email address, employee and school details, details about job classification, employment status, salary/wage range earned and incidental information required to attend to payment of Union fees.

Member signatures/authorities for payment of Union fees may also be collected.
The information is collected for the purpose of processing an application for membership of the Union and then to facilitate the provision of the advertised benefits of Union membership.  If you provide incomplete or inaccurate information the application for membership may not be able to be processed or it may affect delivery of membership services to you.

Your name and mailing address may be provided to a mailing house for the purpose of mailing you information.  The mailing house is under an obligation to maintain confidentiality of your information and does not retain a copy of your details.
From time to time we may need to collect additional information from you for the purpose of providing extended member benefits to you.  This will depend upon the nature of the assistance you require from QIEU from time to time.

2. Disclosure of Personal Information

QIEU treats all information held about members as strictly confidential.  Information about members is not sold, rented or traded for any purposes.  QIEU does not disclose information about you unless:

  • the disclosure is required by law.  For example, QIEU is sometimes required to provide information about members to the Australian Taxation Office or the Industrial Relations Commission;
  • the disclosure of the information is necessary to obtain legal advice to protect the Union?s interests or your interests.  Our solicitors are under an obligation to keep such information confidential;
  • you have consented to our disclosing the information about you.

QIEU may also disclose your information within the organisation (e.g. Chapter Executive) where it is necessary for the purpose for which the information was collected and to provide services to you.

From time to time QIEU sends to members information provided by The Union Shopper Inc. and Queensland Teachers Union Health Inc.  The ability to access these services are benefits of membership of QIEU.  Your personal information is not disclosed to The Union Shopper Inc. or Teachers Union Health Inc. by QIEU.  QIEU simply receives material from The Union Shopper Inc. and Teachers Union Health Inc. which QIEU passes on to its members.  Members are free to use these services or not to do so.  You should note that these organisations may require you to disclose certain information about your union membership to access their services.  Each organisation operates its own privacy policy.

3. Security of Personal Information

QIEU is committed to ensuring that your personal information remains secure and undertakes all reasonable steps to prevent information held by the Union from being accessed illegally.  QIEU endeavours to ensure all information it holds is up-to-date and accurate.  We encourage you to advise us of any changes in your personal information details held by us and we will use all reasonable efforts to keep your personal information up-to-date and accurate.

4. Access to Information

You can request QIEU to provide you with access to the personal information we hold about you at any time.  You may correct any inaccuracies.  You can contact QIEU either by telephone, in writing or by email.  If we are unable to provide any part of the personal information we hold about you, we will let you know why.

5. Use of Our Website

For statistical purposes QIEU collects information on website activities.  Information may be collected on the number of visits; the server address; date and time of visits; number of pages viewed;  documents downloaded;  previous site that has been visited;   and the type of browser that is being used.  Cookies may be used to assist in the collection of information.

6. Retention of Personal Information

Information about members is stored indefinitely as QIEU may need to assist a person with a complaint or charge relating to a matter made many years in the past.

On termination of membership as per the provisions of the Union's Rules and relevant industrial legislation, the member's contact details will be noted as closed.

Information is kept of a deceased member.

7. Complaints Handling

If you have a complaint about the way we have handled your personal information, please contact us to discuss the complaint with one of our Union Officers.  Alternatively, you may put the complaint in writing.  We will respond to your complaint quickly.  If you are not satisfied with our response to your complaint, then you may contact the Privacy Commissioner.  Contact details for the Privacy Commissioner are available on their website on www.privacy.gov.au.
