Joint Supply Teacher Protocol

POLICY 98.01

 Background

Following inquiries from members, your Union raised with the Queensland Teachers' Union the matter of union membership for supply/relief teachers working in both the government and non-government sectors.

Establishing a provision for joint membership is problematic in an industrial sense as well as administratively complex and thus expensive.

Thus both unions have adopted a common sense approach and established a joint responsibility for providing advice to supply/relief members.

Policy Protocol

The following protocol has been endorsed by both unions.

Should either union receive a request for assistance from a financial member which relates to Supply A work done outside of the union's coverage (e.g. a QTU member supplying to a private school) then the union officer should take the following steps:

  •     Confirm membership status.
  •     Take details relating to the problem and an appropriate telephone contact number.
  •     Contact the other union to convey the request for assistance and provide the details.

The union with coverage for the sector will then assist the member and report back as necessary.

It must be emphasised that in the event formal representation of the member is required by the 'other' union then the person will have to take out membership of that union. This is a legal requirement. However, nominal membership fees would apply.

This arrangement only applies to financial members of the respective unions.
